Rescuing Dog Beneath Camper...

Teacher at Worthington Accidentally Electrocuted

A 45-year-old Worthington High School biology, chemistry and general science
teacher, Gerald C. Lettie, was electrocuted last night when he crawled beneath
an electrified camper parked at the rear of his Dayton home.

Armstrong County Coroner John R. "Jack" Kennedy said Lettie had apparently
crawled under the 19-foot camper-trailer to recover his dog which also had been
electrocuted.

The coroner said he believed the camper had become charged due to an improperly
grounded outdoor extension hookup to the house garage which made use of
athree-way plug adapter. The camper, Kennedy said, was rain-soaked as wereLettie
and the dog.

Lettie reportedly lived at home with his parents, Cloy Clinton and Kathleen I.
(Travis) Lettie. He was out walking his dog before the incident.

Kennedy said the victim was dead-on-arrival at Armstrong County Memorial
Hospital, Kittanning at 1:15 a.m. He approximated the time of death to have
been around 9 p.m.

Lettie had been discovered by his brother, Barry L. Lettie at 11:50 p.m. when
the family had become concerned as to his whereabouts.

Kennedy said state police and West Penn Power officials also participated in the
investigation of the incident throughout the night.

Lettie had been employed by the Armstrong School District as a teacher at
Worthington for 19 years. He had previously taught at Marion Center.

He had received his bachelor of science degree from Pennsylvania State
University in 1950 and had completed graduate work at the University of
Pittsburgh.
