Donald E Hoffman

Donald E. Hoffman, 88, of Dayton, Pa., passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at
Autumn Oak Personal Care Home. 

He was born June 14, 1923, in Wayne Township, Armstrong County, to Clifton
Hoffman and Anna (Hallman) Hoffman Painter. 
Donald was raised in Dayton and graduated in 1941 from Dayton Vocational High
School. 

He honorably served his country as a commander in the Navy during World War II,
and also again in the Korean War. After returning from World War II, he attended
the former Indiana State Teacher's College and earned his Bachelor of Science
degree in education. 

Donald then taught in various schools across Pennsylvania, including
Worthington-West Franklin, for the 1948-1949 and 1949-1950 school years. 

He later moved to Upper Marlboro, Md., and became the owner and manager of the
Bragg Motel, a position he held for 25 years until his retirement in 1985. 

Donald returned to Dayton in 1985 and quickly became active in the community. He
was elected mayor of Dayton in 1986 and served one four-year term. 

Donald was a member of Belknap United Church of Christ and was on the Church
Consistory for 12 years and also held the position of treasurer for Milton
Cemetery for 12 years. 

Camping was one of his favorite hobbies and he enjoyed participating in a number
of outdoor activities. Donald was known by many to be a hard worker and his kind
and giving spirit will be greatly missed. 

His memory will be cherished by his daughter, Dona Kephart and husband, Larry,
of Dayton; grandsons, Donald Kephart and wife, Danielle, and Darrin Kephart;
granddaughter, Denise Kephart; great-granddaughters, Mariah and Madison; and
sister, Patricia Neigh, of State College. 

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 52 years, Lenora M.
(McElhiney) Hoffman, who passed away July 9, 1999; daughter, Karla Hoffman;
brothers, Reed and Blair Hoffman; sisters, Eileen Hoffman, Vivian Desrosiers and
Mae Hall; and stepfather, the Rev. Jacob Fink Painter. Friends will be received
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the BAUER-BLY FUNERAL HOME INC., 125 E.
Main St., Dayton, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with
the Rev. Eugene Barrett officiating. 

Burial will be in Milton Cemetery, Wayne Township, Armstrong County, Milton, Pa.
