James Arthur Bowser

The body of a former Worthington youth, James Arthur Bowser, 18, of Weedville,
Elk County, who died at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 1959, of injuries received in an
auto accident at Glasgow, Ky., on Thursday morning, April 2, will be brought to
Worthington for funeral services and burial.

Bowser was a passenger in the car driven by Philip Vollrath, 19, of Eutaw
Street, Harmony. The young Navy men were returning to their Naval Training base
at Pensacola, Fla., late Wednesday night when their car was involved in a
head-on collision with a tractor-trailer truck.

An Airman Apprentice in the Navy, Bowser was born, June 29, 1940, a son of
Arthur Charles and Helen Josephine (Stouffer) Bowser, and reared in Worthington.
He and his family moved to Weedville about five years ago.

Bowser was graduated from Bennets Valley Joint High School, Weedville, with the
class of 1958, and enlisted in the Navy immediately after graduation, in July,
1958. He was returning to his base after spending a leave at home, when the
accident occurred.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Helen (Bowser) Smith of Weedville; two sisters,
Mrs. James Winslow of Weedville and Kay Bowser at home; a half-brother, William
Smith, at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Milton Smith of
Worthington R.D. 1.

Driver of the car, Seaman Apprentice Philip Vollrath, is still listed in
critical condition. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip R. Vollrath, say their son
suffered head, face and internal injuries. They are staying with him at the
Glasgow, Ky., Municipal Hospital.

According to Kentucky State Police, Vollrath fell asleep at the wheel, veered to
the wrong side of the highway and collided head-on with a truck driven by Harold
Siegert of Houston, Tex. Both vehicles were demolished.

Friends of James Arthur Bowser of Weedeville, Elk County, formerly of
Worthington, who died Sunday, April 5, 1959 will be received at the Walker
Funeral Home, Worthington, after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. Friday from the funeral home, with the Rev. James B. Slingluff, pastor
of the Worthington Lutheran Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Worthington Lutheran Church Cemetery, Worthington, Pa., with
military graveside services in charge of the Weedville American Legion Post and
the Kittanning Veterans of Foreign Wars.
