Vernon Frank Shearer

One time Worthington Floor Star Dead Less Than Year After Induction –

Ford City, December 13. Another district soldier has paid the supreme sacrifice
for his country, it was revealed here when Mrs. Elsie (Erickson) Shearer
received a telegram from the War Department informing her that her husband, Pvt.
Vernon Shearer, was killed in action, November 25, 1944, in France.

Pvt. Shearer, born October 5, 1922, a son of Albert H. and Bessie A.(Ruffaner)
Shearer, 
was 22 years of age at the time of his death. A technician in the Medical Corps,
he received his basic training at Camp Barkeley, Texas, and Camp Reynolds, Pa.

In addition to his wife, Pvt. Shearer leaves a 1 1-2-year-old daughter, Linnea.
Mrs. Shearer and daughter reside in the Dornan apartments, Fifth Avenue
extension, Ford City.

The young soldier, who entered the Army a year ago today, on Dec.13, 1943, was a
graduate of Worthington-West Franklin High School, class of 1940, and was well
known in basketball circles. Prior to his entry into the service, Pvt. Shearer
was employed at National Electric Products Company at Ambridge.

Besides his wife and daughter, the young soldier is survived by his parents, of
Worthington R.D. 1 and five brothers and five sisters as follows: John Shearer,
Turtle Creek; Albert Shearer, Jr., Slate Lick; Pvt. Richard Shearer with the
U.S. Infantry at a camp in South Carolina; Alton and Robert at home; Mrs.
Annabel Bouch, Adrian; Mrs. Ethel Nichol, Worthington; Mrs. Melda Bricker,
Sarver; Mrs. Doris Cowan, Hinton, W. Va, and Eyvette, at home.

He was buried in U. S. Military Cemetery in Liney, France.
