John William Campbell

A Punxsutawney man, slumped over the seat of his car, crashed into another
vehicle on Ridge Avenue, Wednesday, April 19, 1972, suffering fatal injuries.

Although the Jefferson County coroner has issued no final ruling, it is believed
that John William "Bill" Campbell, 53, of Dunlap Avenue, suffered a heart attack
moments before the crash.

As he lay on the front seat, the car he was driving traveled about 100 feet
along a bank at the edge of the highway before swerving back onto the road,
striking a car driven by Reed Alexander, of Main Street.

Mr. Campbell suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries in the accident.

Damage in the crash was not extensive with a total of $400 to the Campbell
vehicle and $300 to the Alexander car, Patrolman Fred McCullough reported.

Mr. Campbell was on his way home following work at the B&O-C&O Railroad, where
he was a fireman.

He was born December 12, 1918, in Worthington, Pa., the son of Edgar L. and
Esther M. (Walker) Campbell. He was married May 29, 1937 to Jenny Irene Croyle.

He attended Worthington-West Franklin High School, Worthington, Pa.

Mr. Campbell, who lived in Punxsutawney for the past 29 years, was a veteran of
World War II, a member of the American Legion, Punxsutawney Eagles Club and
United Transportation Union.
