Carl Allan Schaeffer

Carl Allan (Al) Schaeffer, 64, of Kittanning, died Saturday, October 28, 2006,
at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. 

He was born February 11, 1942, in Kittanning to Carl Delbert and Elmira Pearl
(Giles) Schaeffer.

Mr. Schaeffer lived most of his life in Armstrong County. He graduated from
Kittanning High School, class of 1960. 

He was a member of the WPIAL Section 1 high school championship basketball team.
He was a recipient of many musical awards as the primary pianist of the
Kittanning High School concert choir.

Upon graduation, he attended Grace College, Winona Lake, Ind. and was a member
of the basketball team for two years. After attending Grace College, he
transferred to Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he completed his
bachelor of science degree in education with a major in Spanish and a minor in
English. He then attended Slippery Rock University where he received his
master's degree in education in guidance and counseling in 1973.

His professional career included his first job at Worthington West Franklin
School District in 1965 where he taught Spanish and other subjects and was a
part time guidance counselor. In 1980, he was transferred by the Armstrong
School District to Elderton Jr.-Sr. High School as a full- time senior high
school guidance counselor. He retired from Elderton in 2000, with 35 years of
service.

During his lifetime, he was active in many areas, including Worthington
Merchants Athletic Club, YMCA Men,s Club, First Church of God Adult Volleyball
League and Adult Softball League. He was an avid hunter all of his life. He
loved to go to the beach and loved animals.

Mr. Schaeffer was an accomplished pianist for more than 35 years. He was the
principle pianist for the First Church of God and was at many times a guest
pianist at other churches in the community. He also played for many weddings,
funerals and other special occasions. His memberships also included teaching the
Adult Sunday School Class at the First Church of God where he belonged as well
as serving as a member of the Board of Christian Education. He also belonged to
the NEA, the PSEA, the AEA and the BPOE, Elks Lodge 203.

He is survived by his daughter, Jamie B. Schaeffer of Beaver, and her companion
Jim McKelvey of Monaca; his former wife, Edith Bragg of Beaver; and his closest
friend, Emily Deurlein of Vandergrift, and her two children, Jason and Ashley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his maternal grandmother, Hannah
Mary Giles, with whom he was very close.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the
Bauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 515 N. McKean St., Kittanning
where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Paul
Rihel of Christ Community Church officiating. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Orphans of the Storm. 

Interment will be private, at the Kittaning Cemetery, Kittanning, Pa.
